Right now I’m reading Strange Times at Western High by Emily Pohl-Weary. It’s a hip mystery about featuring 16-year-old Natalie Fuentes as she adjusts to life in Toronto and tries to figure out who beat up the chief janitor at the new high school she attends. Emily has done a great job with Natalie, creating a likable heroine that feels quite connected with the underground culture of the city.
The back cover says that Natalie is “super cool” but she isn’t. She’s just “cool”, because she doesn’t try too hard to be cool (unlike the back cover). Emily gives Natalie a good voice, which makes for compelling reading.
I’m also entering the world of Terry Pratchett, especially enjoying his book, Soul Music, which is both a parody of and tribute to rock and roll. I do a full review here.
